Ocala healthcare is adequate-to-strong for typical needs. Two major hospital systems (AdventHealth Ocala, HCA Florida Ocala Hospital), a deep specialist network, and 45-minute access to UF Health Shands in Gainesville for academic-medical-center care. Honest read for relocators evaluating healthcare.
The two hospital systems
AdventHealth Ocala
~400-bed acute care hospital. Strong cardiology, orthopedics, oncology programs. Part of the AdventHealth network, one of the largest faith-based health systems in the country. Generally well-regarded by Ocala residents.
HCA Florida Ocala Hospital

Specialist availability
Ocala has solid availability of:
- Cardiology, orthopedics, dermatology (multiple practices)
- Oncology (both hospitals + community oncology)
- Eye care (multiple ophthalmology practices)
- Primary care (BUT waitlists are long, see below)
Limited availability of:
- Pediatric subspecialty (drive to UF Health Gainesville)
- Complex surgical subspecialty (organ transplant, etc.): UF Health or Orlando
- Mental health (limited; not Ocala's strength)
UF Health Shands (45 min north)
For academic-medical-center care, cancer, cardiac surgery, organ transplant, pediatric subspecialty, rare disease, Ocala residents drive to UF Health Shands in Gainesville. Top 50 hospital nationally in multiple categories. The 45-minute drive is the trade-off for living in a smaller metro.
Orlando + Tampa health systems (90 min)
For complex care not available at UF Shands, Ocala residents go to Orlando Health or Tampa General. Both are major academic medical centers. Helicopter air-medic transport is available for emergencies.
Primary care challenges
The biggest healthcare critique of Ocala: primary care waitlists. Many practices are not accepting new patients. New residents commonly wait 3-6 months for an initial appointment. Plan ahead:
- Start your primary care search BEFORE you move
- Consider concierge / direct primary care (more expensive but immediate access)
- Use AdventHealth's medical group physicians (often more accessible than independent)
Insurance + Medicare
Ocala has strong Medicare Advantage plan availability (relevant given the 29% of residents 65+). Major insurers include: AdventHealth Advantage, Florida Blue, Humana, Anthem. Compare plans annually during open enrollment.
Dental + vision
Both adequate. Multiple dental practices accepting new patients. Vision care via independent optometrists + LensCrafters/Pearle Vision.
